Meet the Maker - Cornish Magpie
Meet Shirley Cookson, the creative mind behind Cornish Magpie, who will be at our Christmas Market on Thursday 28th November
Please tell us a little bit about yourself
I’m Shirley, from Cornish Magpie, and I live in Helston with my 2 children. We moved from Dorset to Cornwall many years ago, having spent all our holidays and lots of weekends travelling to spend time here. I’m originally from Northern Ireland and I find Cornwall to be very similar – friendly people, beautiful landscape and of course, the sea.
What can people expect to find on your stall?
Where did you get the idea to make your creations?
I started my business selling the wonderful creations of others and gradually began introducing little bits and pieces of our own, just to see if people liked them. Having sold some at fairs and events, I decided to expand the designs and range of products.
What is your favourite part of the creation process?
Developing the ranges with different designs and gauging my customers’ reactions when they see the products.
What inspires you most?
Most definitely the sea, the coast – it’s my happy place, and nothing beats a coastal or beach walk to blow away the cobwebs and de-stress.
Describe your creations in three words
Coastal. Colourful. Useful.
Where in Cornwall can you be found when not making and creating?
Standing at the touchline watching my son play football, or out in the car with my daughter who’s learning to drive. Plus I run most days and like to run offroad, on coastal paths or along Penzance prom for example.
What is your favourite thing about Christmas in Cornwall?
Don't forget, our Cornish Christmas Market takes place on Thursday 28th November from 10AM - 4PM
