Meet the Maker - KayCee Cornwall
Meet Karen Clowes, the creative mind behind the Gullz R Loud range - who you will find at our Cornish Christmas Market!
Please tell us a little bit about yourself
I'm Karen (aka KayCee Cornwall). I live in Penzance, Cornwall. My glass painting started as a hobby and a creative way of giving presents to friends and family. After numerous requests to paint glasses for friends of friends; I decided to start up my own little creative industry and now sell my glass art at local craft fairs and to order. I don't just paint glass though. I have recently embarked on my new Gullz R Loud home and giftware range using digital images of my own original acrylic artworks, this product range features my cheeky seagulls and friends.
What can people expect to find on your stall?
My Gullz R Loud range of cheeky seagulls, crabs and puffins are getting everywhere; from Gift Wrap and Cards to Tea Towels, Aprons, Cushions, Lampshades, Fridge Magnets and Oven Gloves.
Where do you get the idea to make your creations?
The ideas for my designs come from the Cornish land, seascapes, and nature. My naughty gulls and their friends were created after I was mugged on St Ives Harbour. As a local, I should have known better than to walk down the St Ives harbour front with a double scoop ice cream cornet!!
What is your favourite part of the creation process?
My favourite part is taking my idea and turning it into a painting. I find painting therapeutic and extremely relaxing. I also love meeting and talking to my customers, I have found that gulls are a bit like Marmite (people either love or hate them) and that almost everybody has had a gull experience!!!!
What inspires you most
I am lucky enough to live in beautiful West Penwith, Cornwall and my work is inspired by the breathtaking surrounding land and seascapes. They include rugged 'Poldark Country' Mine Engine Houses, Cornish fishing boats coming back to harbour, shoals of shimmering mackerel as well as quirky Cornish Gulls
Describe your creations in three words
Charming, light-hearted and practical
Where in Cornwall can you be found when not making and creating?
When not designing and creating I can usually be found on a beach somewhere either walking the coast, staring out to sea or hunting for sea glass.
What is your favourite thing about Christmas in Cornwall?
Being able to take a long walk across the beach after Christmas Dinner
